Magician’s can either be really bold and really clever, or they’re mediocre and a bit boring. Some people avoid magicians like the plague. But I’ve watched several magicians and can never spot the bit where they switch cards or somehow screen off the poor elephant.
Magicians, good ones, are really good at pulling the wool over the eyes of the audience.
So are some politicians, well, most politicians some would say. But there is one, so-called. politician that is great at deflecting people from scrutinising him too closely, and in so doing, hiding his true intent.
Take the idea that a NATO country, Denmark, is being bullied into selling one of its territories to another NATO country, namely, the United States of America. Never mind the fact that the territory in question, Greenland, has its own government and would one day like independence.
Of course, should the man stirring up a hornets nest get his own way he may even decide to invade Greenland. That’s a NATO country invading a NATO country.
But, dear reader, bear in mind the man, the American, doing all this stirring, is none other than the President elect, Donald Trump. Trump, who last time he was in office, was cozying up to Vlad ‘the bad’ Putin and expressed his admiration for quite a few other despots.
Of course, we should also be alert to the fact that Trump deflects, and hides his true intent with a lot of bluster.
Greenland, Canada and Panama… I wouldn’t worry too much. The magician hasn’t played his last hand and shouted the magic words, “Hocus-Potus” just yet, and probably never will. He’s trying to blindside with sleight of hand and marvelous tricks pulled from his sleeves.
Watch this space, or rather, watch Trump’s hands… then again, on second thoughts, just ignore him and he’ll be gone in four years.
