Hooked On Writing

I got hooked on writing at an early age, around eight or nine years old I seem to remember. I can still picture my English book, it had a blue cover, where we pupils would write our classic stories. I remember drafting my first story set in period in the mid 1990s but based on sixties technology. It was exactly the right time to be young and inquisitive about some startling new inventions. It was a science fiction classic story called Planet A for Acid and to me it shows how fertile (or is that febrile) my mind was at an early age. A few years earlier, in 1959, Sir Christopher Cockerell’s invention, the hovercraft SR-N1 (Saunders-Roe Nautical 1) took its maiden flight.

That had obviously stuck in my young mind because my story involved a planet that had lakes of acid and a hovercraft was used to traverse this planet. Don’t ask me what the plot was, that’s lost in the mists of time, but it shows I had ideas for stories in my head even at that tender age.

And even now, over half a century later, I’m still hooked on writing and ideas keep coming. Over a hundred ideas for short stories and novels and I couldn’t stop them coming even if I wanted to. Fertile or febrile, thank goodness my mind is still active and long may it continue to be so.
