Murder He Wrote

A murder mystery novelist thinks up his next plot.

As an author, I like writing historical fiction, and always seem to have my characters committing one or two murders. It allows the darker side of me to come out and mix it up a bit. When writing about murder and the evil characters I create, one particularly nasty villain is William Harker, the evil murderer and henchman to the equally evil Matthew Turner. These two appear in the The Brittle Saga Trilogy which has more than its fair share of death and mayhem. So, I sit here at my desk making up stories about murder most foul, only to discover that I have been living down the road from not one, but two men who killed their partners.

Murder or Mercy Killing

The first one was in the quiet area north of Paphos called Trimithousa where an English guy killed his wife. It was made out to be a mercy killing at his trial for murder. He told the court his wife begged him to end her life as she suffered from blood cancer and was in terrible pain. Having suffered from Lymphoma myself, a form of blood cancer, I can say in all honesty the pain in my bones was agonising. Eventually, after spending almost two years in jail the husband was freed.

A Murderer Escaping Justice

This week, more news on a murderer came to light when a man, known as The Hairdresser, who was serving life for the murder of his partner and her three-year old daughter, escaped prison/police custody. He is from a village called Choletria, just north of Kouklia, where we own an apartment that we rent out.

The escapee was on a scheduled visit to see family members in Choletria on Thursday. That in itself begs a question, surely his family should be visiting him in prison, not the other way round. His prison escort consisted of four prison guards and three members of a police special forces unit. Apparently, around noon, the hairdresser (I have no idea why he is called the hairdresser) went into the kitchen to get a beer from the fridge – a beer! Was he on holiday from prison? Also at around this time, his escort realised he had gone missing. A search of the house and surrounding area came up blank. The prisoner had escaped right under the noses of his escort. Come Sunday, today, they are still looking for the escapee. It’s been reported that the 42-year old prisoner planned the escape and is making his way to Columbia, a distance of 7,021 miles or 11,317 kilometers. Hardly a quick trip round the corner and a long way to walk in this heat.

And I thought some of my plots were far fetched.
