Thanks for the Memory, Cancer

Last Updated on February 1, 2025 by Tom Kane

Memories, can be wonderful things. But they can also be a source of frustration, especially when you can’t remember something that you know you have inside your head. It’s a terrible thing to have the answer on the tip of your tongue, but cannot quite vocalise the memory.

I have a great memory. Sorry, let’s go back a step. I had a great memory, that is until cancer decided to do its dirty work on me. I can’t directly blame the cancer for my now poorish memory. It was the cure that did it to my poor old brain cells. My cocktail of drugs, chemotherapy and currently immunotherapy has zapped more than a few brain cells. The effect is referred to as Chemo Brain. Some say it doesn’t exist, but that’s probably people who have never experienced the wonderous delights of the illness that just keeps giving.

In my case the Chemo Brain is usually short term memory. I can be told something in the morning and have forgotten it by the afternoon. But not all the time, I do retain some working memory.

What is really odd is the fact I can write an entire book and keep all the notes, references, facts and characters in my head. But, there is a downside. I’m currently writing a nine book series and many of the characters appear across a variety of the titles. So I’ve had to create some notes and a spreadsheet for character mapping.

However, I consider myself lucky, at least I can carry on writing, and hope I don’t forget anything important.

“In my opinion, Walking Away From Midnight is a historical fiction winner, offering readers an unforgettable protagonist in Jessie Fordham and a narrative that is as heart-wrenching as it is exhilarating. I highly recommend this novel to anyone seeking a compelling blend of World War II history, suspense, and the indomitable strength of the human spirit.
