It’s something of a well used saying by many an aspiring writer: “I think I have a book in me.”
The saying more likely reflects a notion that everyone has a unique story that’s worth sharing. The phrase has been popular for many years, and obviously one used mainly by aspiring writers.
There is no single origin to the phrase and seems likely to stem from many would-be writers emphasising their desire to write a book. Writing a book is, in many cultures, seen as a way to leave a lasting mark on the world.
It was critic and journalist Christopher Hitchens who was quoted as saying: “Everybody does have a book in them, but in most cases that’s where it should stay.” As an indie author myself, and yes, there is a distinction between a writer and an author, I know some of my early works would have been better off never seeing the light of day. However, I do believe I’ve become a better writer over time. “Practice makes perfect,” and that’s another phrase that is very true and should be in your writing head at all times. To be even an average writer, you need to practice your trade on a daily basis.
I have written both fiction and non-fiction books. All published by myself, designed by me, cover created by me and formatted by me. The only thing I get help with is proofing and editing. I consider myself to be a one-man band. And yes, I have sold some books. In total, in eleven years as an indie author, I’ve had just under 27,000 of my books downloaded. And better still, I’ve had some great 5-Star reviews. Not bad for a 70 year old fossil.
Writing a book is a universal potential. We all have it in us, but many just can’t ever seem to bring it out. If you want to write a book, and can’t seem to get going, take my advice. Buy a laptop and start writing, and keep writing, and never ever stop writing.

“Walking Away From Midnight is a delight! It kept me engrossed from cover to cover and I couldn’t put it down. The characters were well developed and engaging. Jessie’s growth was captivating and left me wanting to know the rest of journey beyond the novel.”
“In my opinion, Walking Away From Midnight is a historical fiction winner, offering readers an unforgettable protagonist in Jessie Fordham and a narrative that is as heart-wrenching as it is exhilarating. I highly recommend this novel to anyone seeking a compelling blend of World War II history, suspense, and the indomitable strength of the human spirit.
