Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

bald man

Something weird has happened in my world, my real world that is. You would expect weird events in worlds I’ve created in my books, but no, this is a real world weird event.

You may realise I’m recovering from cancer, I’ve written about it often enough. One of the odd things I’ve experienced is no hair loss while on chemotherapy. In fact, I was disappointed. You see, I’m a baldy up top, but my hair does grow round the sides and back of my head. On a regular basis I have to shave to maintain an all-round brown tan on my head. So when I started chemotherapy I expected the hair on my head to fall out, and consequently give me a respite from shaving. But it didn’t. In fact, none of my hair fell out. With chemo you should expect hair loss anywhere on the body including the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, chest, underarms, face and pubic area. But no, I didn’t get hair loss anywhere.

My chemo lasted for a gruelling nine months and by the end of it I was shattered. I had lost 5 stone (70lbs/32kg) in weight, I was suffering from chemo-brain (memory lapses), when walking I tended to stagger like a drunk and I had no strength in my arms and legs… but no hair loss.

Four months after my chemo finished I have not put on any weight, my chemo-brain is still evident and I still stagger a little when walking. One good thing, the strength in my arms is returning, but not so much in my legs, walking is out of the question in Cyprus in the summer. Oh, and of course the weird thing I mentioned earlier. I had hairy armpits when I started my chemo, and still had the same hair when I finished chemo. And then it happened, the weird thing I mean. Two weeks ago, the hair in my armpits suddenly vanished.

Hair today, gone tomorrow. If that isn’t weird, I don’t know what is.
