The Final Dog Day Afternoon

It was with a heavy heart that I pulled the vet’s door closed and stood in the street trying hard not to cry. Willpower held me together, then I made the fatal mistake of looking down at my left hand. Her lead was there, curled around my fingers, dirty with mud from the last time we had walked her in the hills. Tears flowed. No more walkies, no more chasing cats and no more lazy evenings on the sofa sleeping while we watched TV. Now she was gone I had to face my wife and tell her that she was no more. She battled the cancer. A hard fight, but one that she could no longer sustain. There was now only one option and the visit to the vet was inevitable. I stayed with her until the end and held her paw as she sighed and passed away.
